No card, no trial timer, no per-symbol fees. Your data exports as JSON any time.
Free doesn't mean free to run.
Market data, servers and archives cost real money. If Spectra earns a place on your screen, buy the founder a coffee — every donation funds deeper data feeds and keeps Spectra independent.
Frequently asked questions
The honest answers traders ask before flipping live trading on.
Is Spectra really free? What's the catch?
No catch. Every feature — footprint, heatmap, DOM, 24/7 cloud alerts, scripting, backtesting, multi-account, export — is free for everyone, forever. No trial timer, no locked 'Pro', no per-symbol fees. Spectra is funded by optional donations, not subscriptions.
If it's free, how is it funded?
By optional community donations. If Spectra earns a place on your screen, you can buy the founder a coffee with crypto (BTC, ETH, or USDT) on the Support page. Donating is entirely optional and unlocks nothing extra — everything is already free.
Do I need an account or a card to use it?
No card, ever. Download the desktop app or open the web app and start charting. A free account is only needed to sync workspaces across devices and run 24/7 cloud alerts — no payment details anywhere.
Will Spectra ever start charging?
The plan is to keep every feature free. If running costs ever forced a change, existing users would be grandfathered and told well in advance — and donations exist precisely so it doesn't come to that.
Can I donate more than once?
Of course — give once, monthly, or never; it's entirely up to you. Donations are gifts that fund data and servers, not purchases, so there's nothing to cancel. Thank you for whatever you can give.
Does Spectra Terminal work on Mac, Windows, and Linux?
Yes. Spectra ships signed native desktop apps for macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon), Windows 10/11, and Linux. The native apps are GPU-accelerated, low-memory, and auto-update. No Electron, no bloated runtime — it feels like a real trading terminal.
Can I use Spectra on iPhone, Android, or tablet?
Yes. Spectra runs in any modern browser on iPhone, Android phones, iPad, and Android tablets. The web app is touch-optimised — smooth scrolling, pinch-to-zoom, mobile keyboards for inputs — and uses the same charting engine as the desktop. Your workspaces sync across devices when you sign in.
What do rival platforms charge for this?
The major retail platforms charge $30 to $60/month for a subset of what Spectra does, plus another $25/symbol/month for data — and desktop order-flow suites run $1,499/year. Spectra includes footprint charts, order-book heatmap, DOM ladder, 24/7 cloud alerts, and scripted strategies for free — no per-symbol fees, no watermarks, no "premium real-time" upsell.
What markets does Spectra cover? Stocks, crypto, forex?
All three. Stocks and ETFs via Twelvedata and Tiingo. Crypto via Binance (spot and futures) and other major exchanges. Forex via Twelvedata. Live tick streaming, full historical bars, and order routing where the broker supports it.
Does Spectra have footprint charts?
Yes — full footprint charts with bid/ask volume, delta, imbalance highlighting, and value-area shading. Included free, on every supported instrument, on every platform (desktop and web).
Can I see the order book heatmap and DOM ladder?
Yes. The DOM ladder shows live bid/ask depth with one-click order entry. The order-book heatmap visualises resting liquidity over time so you can see absorption and large-size walls before they hit the tape. Both are free, both run native-fast.
Does Spectra support volume profile and TPO?
Yes — composite volume profile, session volume profile, and Market Profile / TPO charts are all built in. Configurable POC, value-area percentage, and profile mode (per-session vs. composite).
Can I write my own indicators and strategies?
Yes. Spectra ships a sandboxed scripting DSL for custom indicators, alerts, and strategies. No C# or Pine required — strategies compile to the same bytecode that powers our backtester and 24/7 cloud worker. No "unsafe" paths, no file or network access outside audited built-ins.
Are 24/7 cloud alerts really included for free?
Yes. Price-level alerts, indicator alerts, drawing-cross alerts, and full custom-DSL strategy alerts all run on our cloud worker 24/7 — free. Delivery via email, webhook, Telegram, Discord, or push. No "alert credit" pricing — fire as many as you want.
Can I bring my own broker?
Auto-orders ship with Binance support (spot + futures) today. Tradovate, Interactive Brokers, and Alpaca are on the roadmap. Webhook-based broker integrations work today for any platform that accepts signed HTTP.
Is paper trading realistic? Can I backtest strategies?
Yes to both. Paper trading models slippage in basis points, commission per fill, partial fills, and gap-handling. Backtests use the exact same engine as live trading — you don't get one result on paper and a different one in production.
How much memory does Spectra use? Do I need a fast laptop?
Spectra runs comfortably on an 8 GB laptop with Chrome, Slack, and your editor open. No Electron, no Java, no bloated runtime. The native app hits 144 fps on 50,000 candles on a base-model M2 MacBook Air, and runs smoothly on older Windows laptops where browser-based charting tools start dropping frames.
Do my scripts run on your servers?
Only if you opt in for 24/7 cloud alerts and auto-orders. Otherwise the desktop runs them locally and nothing leaves your machine.
Is live trading safe by default?
Yes — live trading is off by default. Flipping to live requires a typed-phrase confirmation; auto-orders need a separate 2FA acknowledgement per broker secret. Paper trading is the default mode.
Where is my data stored?
Supabase (EU region by default; US optional). Encrypted at rest. Webhook secrets are sealed in the database. Your workspaces, scripts, and trade history belong to you and export as JSON anytime.
Can I self-host Spectra? How do I delete my account?
Self-host: not yet — the cloud backend is closed-source. The desktop app works fully offline if you skip cloud sync. Account delete: Profile → Delete account removes every owned row and your identity itself (GDPR-compliant).
Ship trades, not config files.
Download the desktop, paper-trade for as long as you need, then opt in to live when you can articulate your edge.
